Particular attentions are paid to the thermodynamic and dynamic factors responsible for the spatial structure and seasonality of the intermodal spread of surface temperature. The global inter-linkage and winter amplification of the intermodal spread are found over the high latitudes in both northern and southern hemispheres but with different mechanisms. The analysis may help understand the sources of model biases in climate simulations.
