Evalutions of the Madden-Julian Oscillation in FGOALS-g3 and FGOALS-g2Ye PU, LiJuan LI, Hongbo LIU, Li DONG, Bin Wang State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG), Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100029, ChinaAbstract:This study evaluates the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) in the Flexible Global Ocean-Atmosphere-Land System Model: Grid-point Version 3 (FGOALS-g3) and previous FGOALS-g2 versions based on their AMIP and historical runs. The analysis includes the mean state, variance, the eastward propagation strength of outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) and 850- and 200-hPa zonal winds within the MJO-related frequency–wavenumber range and life cycle. Results show that both versions could simulates basic MJO feature, such as eastward propagation of the convective envelope for the period from 30 to 80 days with wavenumbers 1–3,and composite phases associated with MJO. However, the model’s spectrum power peak is weak.The coupled model has better simulations signal of MJO than the atmospheric model in both two models version, which means air–sea interaction mainly increases the convective signature and improve the MJO simulation ability.The new version, FGOALS-g3 could make the model’s simulations of mean state and variance more reasonable than FGOALS-g2, especially enhancing the eastward propagation.
